[At Carlisle Cross, November 11th, 1918.]
Oh! many a time in fair Carlisle
With joy have people met,
But not beneath this glad earth’s smile
We never shall forget.
For we who wave our flags to-day
Around the Market Cross,
Can hear all nations sing or say,
“Though bitter is our loss,
We thank our God that Peace is ours,
And battle flags are furled,
Not Might, but Right’s transcendent powers
Henceforth shall rule the world.
